The Design Philosophy Behind Gardner Hooks. The Gardner range of carp hooks has been designed in conjunction with leading big carp anglers in
order to provide the user with a superior technical advantage over other anglers, and provide an
‘edge’ when fishing some of Europe’s hardest and most pressured venues where every bite needs
to be converted into a fish on the bank.
The hooks are not only designed purely as ‘big carp’ hooks
UK angler Martin Pick with a 47lb 14oz French carp
though, but also as the sort of hook anglers might choose for catching large numbers of carp in a single
sitting as well as a result of them being about the most durable hooks there are available! From the outset
Gardner aimed to achieve a degree of sharpness in the hook points that had not previously been seen on
other carp fishing patterns, and work closely with one of the finest Japanese hook manufacturers to design
the most durable, ultra sharp and perfectly formed point possible.
The super sharp points that evolved were definitely better at pricking and catching in the mouth of shy and
cautiously feeding carp. In the UK it can take a long time to catch a big carp; many hours and days can
be spent without a single fish. However, when the angler finally has that run, the super sharp hooks prove
highly efficient at hooking and landing it. The different patterns available are the result of hundreds of hours
of design and testing. Crucial variations such as wire diameter, angle of attack and point deflection, eye angle
and degree of forging are carefully manipulated in controlled conditions to achieve the very best hooking
percentages, holding power and reliability.
New patterns then undergo extensive field testing by the Gardner team of top anglers for many months on
different types of waters; any tweaks and adjustments are incorporated into the final pattern before approval.
All Gardner hooks undergo a unique two stage process during manufacture.
In the first stage the hooks are heated up to a very high temperature for a short time and then quickly cooled.
The second process is much longer and the hook is treated at a much lower temperature. The combination
of these two processes ensures that the steel is first purified and the molecular structure is transformed into
the perfect state between being too brittle or too soft. Not surprisingly, the exact details are jealously guarded
but have a proven track record. The chemical sharpening process guarantees Gardner’s legendary sharpness
together with a point of high Carbon Steel that resists damage against gravel or bone.
The specific patterns in the range include:
The MuggaThe Mugga offers unrivalled hooking potential when used with a variety of hooklink materials. This pattern
has a proven track record for nailing wary feeding fish and then staying in them all the way to the angler's
waiting net. The combination of an inturned eye, non-reversed bend, sweeping shank, strong forged wire
and super sharp point has established the Mugga as a devastatingly reliable hook. The Size 12 has now
become a firm favourite for use in Zig Rig fishing as an effective means of reducing the number of hook pulls
commonly associated with this method. Mugga hooks are used and recommended by many top anglers, and
available from Size 6 to Size 12.
"Ever since catching a brace of 40's (and a brace of mid-30's the next day) from an extremely weedy bay
last year, I have used Mugga hooks with complete confidence and haven't looked back since. The hook
holds are unbeatable and I now use Muggas for most of my fishing." Jerry Hammond "Above all, you
need a hook that's going to stay sharp. I've been using the Mugga on my recent adventures on the
River Ebro and have never had any problems with this magnificent hook. Reliable? I wouldn't feel
confident with anything else after the successes I've had, bless 'em." Ronnie Buss
The Long Shank Mugga
There is no doubt that lengthening the shank of a hook increases its hooking potential. Gardner have applied
this reasoning to the Mugga, incorporating an extra long curved shank, a non-reversed bend and manufactured
from super strong forged Carbon Steel. The point is fiendishly sharp and stays sharp longer than most other hooks.
Perfect for use with some of the more advanced anti-ejection rigs being used, the hook is ideal for pop-ups in
the largest size and for balanced bottom baits in the smaller sizes. A devastatingly effective hook however it is
Available from Size 6 to Size 10.
"I've always been a fan of the short shank Mugga and never thought I'd find a better hook but I'm
ecstatic to find that the Long Shank Mugga has performed equally as well, if not better - fantastic hooks."
Lewis Porter (Editor, Crafty Carper)
“I recently moved over to the Long Shank Mugga Hooks for pop-up rigs and they have definitely converted
more pick-ups to fish on the bank - more even than extending hook shanks with shrink tube or similar
long shank hooks available on the market.” Tim Childs
The Talon Tip
Incredibly strong in all sizes, the chemically etched beaked point and in turned eye design of the Talon Tip,
along with a forged off-set bend and micro barb has made this hook the benchmark against which other
similar hook patterns should be judged. Whether being used for huge Carp or hard fighting river fish like Barbel,
this pattern offers unmatched reliability, excellent hooking potential and firm hook holds. A particularly useful
UK angler Lewis Read with ‘Nigels’ at 38lb 8oz
pattern when fishing over gravel as the pattern is less prone to the point being damaged by touching stones
than straight point hooks. Feedback has also indicated that this hook is fantastic for waters where barbed
hooks are banned as the beak point grips and holds extremely well. Available from Size 2 to Size 12.
“Talon Tips are ideally suited to the s tresses and strains of big Barbel fishing but I use these ultra reliable hooks in all kinds of angling situations for big fish where strength is paramount.” Neil Wayte
A superbly versatile shape, the Incizor has proven extremely reliable for use in a huge number of angling
situations, whether used in the smaller sizes for Zig Rigs or in the other sizes for more conventional rigs for
specimen Carp, Tench, Bream, Barbel or Chub, the numbers of huge fish of all species captured on these
brilliant hooks is staggering. The point is durable thanks to double tempering the highest quality Carbon Steel
and the non-reversed bend and general dimensions of the Incizor mean this pattern will remain the choice of a
great many discerning anglers around the world. Available from Size 4 to Size 10.
“Incizor’s do everything that you want a hook to do. Strong, sharp and ultra reliable. A good all round hook that I use for open water and snag fishing in the majority of angling situations.” Dave Benton
Long Shank Incizor
There are points and then there are razor sharp points. The needle point on the Long Shank Incizor is famous for
being phenomenally sharp - there’s no other way to say this. Quite simply it’s a long shank hook in a class of
its own. In terms of strength it wipes the floor with other long, straight shank hooks available and has been used
by anglers in the know to actually increase their catch rate. Add to this the double tempered point that stays
sharper for longer and you realize why this hook is so deadly. When all else fails, reach for the Long Shank
Incizor...you’ll soon see... Available from Size 6 to Size 10.
“Probably the sharpest hook ever. I love long shank hooks and these are just so sharp they’re dangerous. An awesome hook!” Ian ‘Chemo’ Russell
Developed specifically for use with D Rigs or monofilament, fluorocarbon and stiff hooklink materials, the
D-Ceptor hook is made from super sharp forged Carbon Steel for supreme strength. Its ultra sharp point is
honed to perfection. The non-reversed bend and out turned eye ensures that this hook can be used with complete
confidence when tied with either the No-knot or Dumhoff knot with stiff and mono hook links as the hook link
isn’t flattened or strained by forcing it over an eye at an acute angle. Stronger and sharper than other hooks of
this kind, the D-Ceptor is now the No.1 choice for Chod and Stiff links. Available in Sizes 4, 6 and 8.
“D-Ceptor Hooks are strong, seriously sharp and totally reliable. The out-turned eye and straight point ensures a solid hook hold making the D-Ceptor the only hook I need for all my pop-up and chod rig fishing.” Rick Golder
